Professional Development Plan

As a rising student affairs professional, my learning does not stop upon receiving my graduate degree. I have created a professional development plan to further elaborate on five areas within higher education and student affairs: risk management, leadership development, assessment, undocumented student support, and first generation student support. Below are my detailed plans for developing competency within these areas in my next three years.  By the end of my third year as a new student affairs practitioner, I hope to accomplish the following opportunities listed, in order to maximize my potential for learning.

- Join NASPA's Campus Safety and Violence Prevention Knowledge Community
- Reread The Rights and Responsibilities of the Modern University by Lake
-Research risk management procedures at my institution in relation to my functional area
- Attend URMIA's Western regional conference
- Meet with risk management professionals at my institution to understand how current policies have influenced campus culture
-Watch Higher Ed Live's Peter Lake and the Law with Tony Doody
- Present at NASPA national conference on prioritizing risk management in student affairs
- Review HIED 7210 course material and cases surrounding risk management and duty of care within higher education
Leadership Development
- Retake StrengthsQuest to evaluate whether current strengths have shifted since graduate school
- Join NASPA's Student Leadership Programs Knowledge Community
- Advise student organization at my institution, ask organization's officers to take StrengthsQuest, and facilitate one-on-one advising based on their strengths
- Read The Student Leadership Challenge by Kouzes and Posner
-Read Servant Leadership by Greenleaf
- Become a Gallup-Certified Strengths Coach
-Facilitate one StrengthsQuest workshop with cohort of students at my institution 
Assessment
- Review CSP 6030 notes on assessing campus culture and environments 
- Obtain knowledge of current assessment tools being used within the office and institution I work for
- Read Assessment in Student Affairs by Schuh
- Join NASPA's Assessment Knowledge Community
- Consult with professionals who work in assessment on my campus on ways to improve understanding of data
- Attend 2021 NASPA national conference sessions surrounding best practices for implementing assessment into daily work 
First Generation Student Support
- Attend conference sessions surrounding supporting first generation student populations at NASPA 2019 in Los Angeles, CA
- Obtain information on first generation student demographics at my institution
- Read New Research on First Generation Students by Smith on Inside Higher Ed
- Collaborate with student affairs professionals at my institution to develop programming designed for first generation student engagement and retention
- Read Straight from the Source: What Works for First Generation College Students by the Pell Institute
- Present at NASPA regional conference on first generation student engagement and retention
Undocumented Student Support
- Read Questions and Answers document from studentaid.gov to understand intersection between financial aid and undocumented students
- Explore DACA page on US Citizenship and Immigration Services website
- Read weekly news surrounding DACA policies from Wall Street Journal and Inside Higher Ed

-Join NASPA's Undocumented Immigrants and Allies Knowledge Community
- Utilize ULead's website to gain knowledge on California's policy surrounding undocumented students and financial aid
- Read United We Dream's Guide for Supporting Immigrants and Refugee Children 
- Attend conference sessions surrounding supporting undocumented student populations at 2021 NASPA national conference
